Really Need Some Help Finding Answers
« on: March 09, 2010, 06:50:08 AM »

I need to find some sort of throttle control device for the left hand grip.
I Cannot Find Any Thumb Throttle or Reverse Twist Throttle Anywhere.
Does anyone know if there is a thumb throttle that can be modified? Can you buy one already designed for left hand use?  Where Can I Buy One?

I already fabricated a prosthetic gizmo to hold the handlebar and now the lousy throttle has me dead in my tracks.
The images show the throttle cable going to the carb and oil pump.
I tried to simply reverse the throttle but I can't use the clutch this way.
At this point I figure I would install an aftermarket twist throttle as well as a clutch lever on the left. As for the front brake I am not concerned about that at this point.

interesting situation.  My first thought would be to go to Ebay they have some thumb throtle available that are used for ATVs

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Throttle-Thumb-Assembly-for-ATV-Quad-Bike-110CC-TT01_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a4885b217QQitemZ250324824599QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

also there is another disabled riders forum in England.

http://forum.disabledbiker.co.uk

Their Admin is not as attractive as Robin but they are pretty knowledgable when it comes to adapting bikes for 1 arm control

best of luck hope you get back on the road soon

Would a double cabled push/pull simply be configured to rotate in reverse of the right hand unit work for you? If you reversed the cables at the carb, it would open when you twist the opposite direction of right hand operation. This I know will happen, please don't ask how I know

I can't think of a reason why it would not work. The throttle cable on my Harley has two cables (1985 FXEF), so they should be easyt to find....like on eBay.

It's quite simple really.

You have about a 2" extension welded onto your left handlebar, then you take the throttle off the right handlebar, and mount it inside out on the left handlebar.  I have done this on nine different bikes, including my current ride, the BMW R 75/6.  I have posted complete instructions on this several times on this website, showing tt on different bikes.  It always works perfectly.  If you are riding two wheels, you need to go to a double handle like Shorts made for her bike to bring both the brake and clutch to your left handlebar. If you are riding three wheels then set up an electric shifter and a foot operated clutch like on my BMW.

Here are three examples of the left hand throttle followed by one of the electric shifter and foot operated clutch:

You will notice the starter button and kill switch often end up at the end of the handlebar.  This is a good thing because you do not need to reach over them to get to the turn indicator switch
