Robin (Hot Wheels) is a disabled woman who has Spina Bifida and is thus in a wheelchair. Despite that fact she is a real "spitfire" who was "born to be wild". Spina Bifida may prohibit the use of her legs but that doesn't stop her from shimmying onto the backseat of my Harley Davidson Softail Classic to take her place in my "bitch seat". She thought she'd never fulfill her dream of being a Lady Rider. That all changed when she met me, Twinkle Toes. I was determined to enable her to realize her dream. That was when I conceptualized and began to build our wheelchair carrier for the back of my bike. In the begining we started out slow. I lifted her onto the bike and strapped into her seat with a seltbeat I fashioned from a velcro strap wrapped around the back of the passenger seat and strapped her feet with small bungee cords to my rear crash bars. Then we were off, at first just around the town but then venturing onto the highway. Once she felt the roar of the engine on the highway she was hooked. She never wants to get off the bike. Now she no longer needs the security of a seatbelt or the leg straps I fashioned for her. Now she shimmys onto her seat all by herself. I have never met a woman with such will and sheer determination. Twinkle Toes (Vinny), is a late bloomer biker. My first ride was on a Honda Shadow 650. Standing a massive 5'4" in my boots, I'll never forget the pride I felt as I actually touched the floor and pushed the bike back and forth. I thought I'd never be able to touch the floor to balance a bike. From then on I was like the Little Engine That Could. I eventually moved up to the ride of my dreams when I got my Softail Classic, that I affectionately call Betty. Since then I have ridden to most of the motorcycle events across America, most of them with Hot Wheels on the back. We average 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year. The best thing about
Hot Wheels and I is that we inspire each other. There are two words in
the dictionary that are not in our vocabulary, "never" and "can't". We
now want to share our inspiration with all of you. |
